Prep Roundup, Sept. 12: Bluffton volleyball team takes down Wando

VOLLEYBALL

Bluffton High School: The Bobcats opened their region schedule with a win in a tri-match at Summerville and also knocked off Class 4-A power Wando in a non-region matchup.

Bluffton defeated Wando -- currently ranked No. 3 in the state -- 25-21, 24-26 and 25-21. It was the Bobcats' first victory over Wando.

Bluffton swept Summerville, 25-12, 25-12.

Mackenzie Cooler led Bluffton (8-4 overall, 1-0 region) with 19 kills and 20 assists on the night. Jordan Franklin added 14 kills and 21 assists, and Abby Roulston had 13 kills and four blocks. Morgan Delaplane led the team with 14 digs, and Melissa Bornstein added 10 more.

The Bobcats play a tri-match at Hilton Head Island High School at 5:30 p.m. today.

Ashley Ridge 2, Beaufort High 0: The Eagles (1-3, 0-1) dropped their region opener 25-15, 25-21.

Kaila Smith had six kills and six digs for Beaufort, while Ashley Tillery had 12 digs, Jaellene Carson had eight assists and Amber Clatterbuck had 12 assists and three digs.

Beaufort High, along with Goose Creek, plays a trimatch at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Fort Dorchester.

Battery Creek 3, Garrett Academy 0: Walicia Patterson had six aces, two kills and a dig, and Sara Anderson added four aces, five kills and a dig to lead the Dolphins (5-4) to a 25-17, 25-10, 25-12 victory.

Other Battery Creek contributors included La'Schirrae Morrall (six kills), Rebekkah Scott (13 aces), Tina Kwok (five aces, one dig) and Tenielia Leak (seven kills).

Battery Creek, along with Academic Magnet, playss a tri-match at 6 p.m. Thursday at Burke.

Whale Branch Early College High School: The Warriors (14-2, 2-0) swept Bethune-Bowman 2-0 (25-29, 25-18) and Allendale-Fairfax 2-0 (25-12, 25-19).

Among Whale Branch's top contributors were Maddy Summerill with four kills and 20 service points, Jamie Whalen with seven kills and 23 service points, Kenyada Moultrie with eight kills and 10 service points and Rietta Salters with four kills and 26 service points.

Whale Branch hosts Branchville and Estill for a tri-match at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Hilton Head Prep 3, Northwood Academy 0: Jill Brunori had five blocks and 11 kills to lead the Dolphins (3-3) to a 25-16, 25-21, 25-23 win on the road to get back to .500.

Abby Miles added six kills, Brooke Churchich had 22 assists and 10th-grader Riley Brown had her first varsity kill.

Hilton Head Prep hosts First Baptist at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Thomas Heyward 3, Charleston Collegiate 0: The Rebels (10-3, 2-0) won 25-9, 25-5, 25-8 on the road in Charleston behind Chandler Cook's 11 aces.

Pther contributors for the Rebels included Laynee Bryan (six kills, five aces, assist), Hailey Malphrus (two kills, nine assists), Jordan Hunnicutt (two kills, two assists, ace), Kayla Sanders (13 of 13 serving, three aces), Jordan Brown (six aces), Victoria Quick (five kills, two aces, assist) and Bethany Dell (two kills).

Thomas Heyward hosts Bible Baptist at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

JV: Ashley Ridge 2, Beaufort High 0 (25-6, 25-21)

Middle School A: St. Francis 2, St. Gregory 0 (25-21, 25-17)

Middle School B: St. Gregory 2, St. Francis 1 (25-27, 25-18, 15-11)

GIRLS GOLF

Bluffton 162, Fort Dorchester 199, Hilton Head Island 206, Beaufort High 231: Bluffton's Kylie Nizolek and Brandi Hammonds shared medalist honors with matching 37s on a windy day at at Dataw Island to lead the Bobcats to their season-best score and the victory.

Bluffton's Kasidy Beckel and Hilton Head Island's Nathalie Lazcano tied for third at 39. The low scores for Fort Dorchester were 47s by Taylor Mayers and Megan Diesso, while Beaufort High's low scorer was Michelle Britton with a 49.

GIRLS TENNIS

Beaufort High 4, Hilton Head Christian 3: Beaufort High (1-1) won on the road to hand Hilton Head Christian (2-1) its first loss of the season.
