Hay stolen from Heroes on Horseback

Published: September 10, 2012

Volunteers and staff with Bluffton nonprofit Heroes on Horseback are considering security changes after a thief stole more than five bales of hay from the charity last weekend.

Equestrian director Laura Kinsey said someone made off with the hay, valued at not more than $7 a bale, between the horses' morning and evening feedings on Sept. 1. The nonprofit is on Grassey Lane and uses horses to help children and adults with disabilities.

Kinsey said the feeding stables are unlocked, but the organization is now making keys for feeders to lock up when they're not there. The seven horses in the stable go through about three bales a day, she said.

"Who would come in and take from a nonprofit?" Kinsey said. "We can't afford to have someone stealing our hay."
