More arson charges for man accused of burning portable bathrooms

Robert Birchenough, 20, was charged Sunday with third-degree arson for setting a garbage can on fire on Hunting Island on Aug. 29, the same day he was accused of setting portable bathrooms on fire in Port Royal.

The fire was reported at 10 a.m. Aug. 29 at the Marsh Boardwalk, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office. A garbage can had been filled with phone books, placed under the dock and set on fire. The boardwalk was damaged.

That same day, Birchenough and Amanda Benoit, 18, were charged with setting two bathrooms and a trash can on fire Aug. 26 at The Sands in Port Royal. According to the Sheriff's Office, phone books and lighter fluid were found in their vehicle, and they confessed to the bathroom fires.

Both were charged with three counts of arson and one count of malicious injury to personal property, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center log.

Birchenough was also charged with unlawfully carrying a pistol.
