Jasper County students back in class after bomb threat

September 10, 2012

Jasper County students returned to class shortly before 1 p.m. after a bomb threat prompted an evacuation this morning.

The bomb threat was received by telephone at the Jasper County School District office in Ridgeland over the weekend, and officers worked this morning to clear students from the buildings at both the Hardeeville and Ridgeland campuses as a precaution, according to a news release.

The threat was called in to the main number at the district office at 7:15 p.m. Friday. Officers with the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a suspicious call to the district office around 8 a.m. today when the message was retrieved from the district’s answering service. It was determined by law enforcement there was a need to evacuate both campuses and do a complete search of each of them. At about 8:30 a.m., students were evacuated from the schools as a bomb squad was called to the scene to investigate the area, the release said.

Students were transported by bus from the Ridgeland campus to the Ridgeland-Hardeeville High School football field. Students at the Hardeeville campus walked to the football field located directly next to the campus. Law enforcement is also on scene with the students at both campuses. Parents were notified of the situation through the Alert Now System. Students at the Hardeeville campus returned to class by 11:45 a.m. Students at the Ridgeland campus returned about an hour later.

No bomb was found at either campus, according to a district spokesperson. The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, the Ridgeland Police Department and the Hardeeville Police Department are still investigating.
