A 19-year-old Marine who graduated from boot camp this morning drowned around 4:45 p.m. off Hunting Island State Park, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office officials.

The man was swimming about 40 yards off the beach, just south of the lighthouse, according to Lady’s Island-St. Helena Island Fire District spokesman Lee Levesque. A relative called 911 after losing sight of him.

Lady’s Island-St. Helena Fire and Fripp Island fire districts and Fripp Island Water Search and Rescue responded. The Sheriff’s Office took over the investigation when the body was recovered at about 5:25 p.m., Levesque said.
