Three Hilton Head Island men were charged Monday with robbery and kidnapping after a drug deal fell apart, authorities say.

Two 18-year-old men had arranged to meet Sherman Rubio, 19, and Charles Mehlinger, 18, to buy drugs, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release. Rubio and Mehlinger held them in a Honda Pilot against their will and demanded money owed by one of the captive teens, the release said. The suspects later snatched cash from that teen's pocket.

The victims were driven at about 9:30 p.m. to Dillon Road, where another man, Ian Drolshagen, 19, got into the car, the release said. The suspects threatened to kill the teens, according to authorities.

One of the victims secretly dialed 911 and left the line open long enough to tell dispatchers their location.

The victims were neither harmed nor charged with a crime.

Rubio and Mehlinger were each charged with two counts of kidnapping and one count of strong-arm robbery. Drolshagen was charged with two counts of kidnapping.

Mehlinger was also charged with one count of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

All three were being held Tuesday at the Beaufort County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing, according to the jail log.
