Three Hilton Head men arrested for strong-arm robbery and kidnapping

Three Hilton Head Island men were arrested Monday and charged with strong-arm robbery and kidnapping following a drug deal gone wrong on Hilton Head Island.

Deputies from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office were alerted at about 9:30 p.m. Monday to a possible kidnapping and robbery in progress on Dillon Road, where two people were reportedly held against their will in a Honda Pilot.

One of the trapped victims was able to secretly dial 911 and left the line open long enough to relay to dispatchers what was happening in the SUV and where they were.

Based on that information, authorities located the SUV and conducted a traffic stop in a parking lot on Mathews Drive, a news release said.

Two of the vehicle's passengers, both 18, told authorities that they had arranged to meet Sherman Rubio, 19, and Charles Mehlinger, 18, to buy drugs, investigators said.

When they met, Rubio and Mehlinger held them in the car and demanded money. The suspects later snatched cash from the teen's pocket.

The two victims were then driven to Dillon Road where they picked up Ian Drolshagen, 19. The two teen victims were held in the car, and the suspects threatened to kill them.

The victims were not harmed and were released without being charged.

Rubio and Mehlinger were each charged with two counts of kidnapping and one count of strong-arm robbery. Drolshagen also was charged with two counts of kidnapping.

Authorities also charged Mehlinger with one count of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute after he was found with the drug at the time of the traffic stop.

All three suspects were being held Tuesday at the Beaufort County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing, according to the county jail log.
