Learn about whales of South Carolina

Published: September 3, 2012

The Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island will host a "Whales of South Carolina" presentation at 3 p.m. Nov. 14.

Al Segars, veterinarian with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, will discuss the natural history of the whales that visit state waters and their status, as well as the threats and challenges whales face, according to the museum.

Several whale species pass through state waters in search of food or to give birth. They include the North Atlantic right whale, one of the most endangered whale species in the world, with numbers estimated in the few hundreds, according to a news release.

The cost is $7 a person, and reservations are required by calling 843-689-6767, extension 223. The museum is at 70 Honey Horn Drive.
