Oh, those clever boat names

Published: September 2, 2012

While in Myrtle Beach last week I had the opportunity to visit a friend at the marina. Ronnie Nelson lives on his boat, a well-appointed 45-foot houseboat aptly named "Chick-n-Ship."

The reason the name fits is because Ronnie is a bachelor and lives on a boat at the marina. His boat has no engines, since he opted not to re-power a few years back. In place of engines he installed a large hot tub and wet bar. Needless to say, his outings are confined to a small tender and the generosity of friends during an emergency. But he reciprocates in kind and things are working out pretty well.

Boat names are a lot like personal license plates, a vanity sign of sorts that can be confusing. Take for instance the name "Bow Movement." Do you suppose the owner was claiming his profession or just stating a fact? If this is the norm, I doubt the owner of "Welfare Fraud" put much thought into his choice.

Whether you're trying to claim a presence or simply wishing to get a laugh, an unusual boat name can do it for you.
