Beaufort High School football team rebounds with rout of Aiken, 48-13

After a 37-0 whitewashing a week ago in the season opener at Wando, Beaufort High School head coach Mark Clifford told his team to forget about it.

"To be a good football team, you've got to have a bad memory," Clifford said. "We had to get that behind us and go back to work."

After all that hard work, the Eagles' first possession Friday night against Aiken at home looked like something else they'd want to forget.

Aiken's William Spann busted through the line and blocked a Jordan Bates punt inside the Beaufort 20-yard line and Mike Mitchell picked it up and rumbled in for the easy touchdown for a quick 7-0 lead.

But along with the loss to Wando, Beaufort High put this bad start behind them and demolished the Green Hornets, 48-13.

"I'm happy for them," Clifford said. "They've worked so hard. It's great to get that taste out of our mouths from last week."

The Eagles' offense ran like a fine car -- smooth and efficient.

Beaufort spread the ball around on the ground, racking up 46 carries among eight runners. JaClay Mixon carried 13 times for 46 yards, and Josh Roberts logged 10 carries for 59 yards to lead the way. Each had two touchdowns on the night, and Mixon added a 28-yard scoring reception, as well.

Junior quarterback Ben Vaigneur was nearly perfect, completing nine of 11 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

"It wasn't me. It was that O-line in front of me," Vaigneur said." That's who you need to give all the credit to. The backs ran as hard as they could, the receivers caught what they did and I just did my job. But it started with the O-line."

Clifford praised Vaigneur's game-management skills.

"He does a great job of putting the ball where it can be caught," Clifford said. "We started involving him in the run a little bit tonight. And he had a big run early that helped us get over that blocked punt situation. He's a great leader."

Vaigneur said the loss at Wando only doubled the Eagles' resolve.

"It fueled us. It pushed us harder," Vaigneur said. "It made us want it a lot more."

While the offense was nearly unstoppable, the defense did just about nothing but stop the Aiken running game, keeping dangerous quarterback Will Heggs hemmed in. By the time he finally busted loose for a 47-yard touchdown ramble in the fourth quarter, the Eagles were playing many of their reserves.

"Our team played great assignment defense," Clifford said.

Sophomore linebacker Tyler Clancy seemed to be in the right place at the right time on several occasions.

Late in the first half, he sacked Heggs for a 17-yard-loss at the Green Hornets' 20. In the third quarter, he recovered a Heggs fumble at the Green Hornets' 15. And on the last play of the third quarter, he made a big stop of Aiken's Gabe Green on a third-and-short situation.

"He's going to be a great player," Clifford said. "Right now he's a 100-percent energy guy."
