2 held at gunpoint, beaten on Hilton Head

Published: August 27, 2012

Two men, ages 61 and 75, said a man held them up at gunpoint and assaulted them Sunday morning during an armed-robbery attempt on Hilton Head Island, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

The 75-year-old man said he was picking up his 61-year-old friend to go fishing when a light-colored sedan pulled up behind his vehicle on Squire Pope Road, according to a news release.

A man approached, pointed a gun at him and demanded money. When the attacker didn't find any money after searching the man's pockets, he walked back to his vehicle and drove away, the release said.

The man picked up his friend and the two followed the suspect's vehicle to try to write down the license number. As they tailed the car on Spanish Wells Road, a shot was fired at them but missed, and they called deputies.

The suspect's car pulled up again. The driver got out, punched the 75-year-old man in the face, pistol-whipped his 61-year-old passenger and drove away.

The suspect is described as a large black man in his 40s, 6-feet-2, 220 pounds, wearing orange pants and a checkered shirt.
