Published: August 20, 2012

Two women walking on Craven Street in Beaufort on Saturday night reported a man armed with a pistol stole their purses, according to the Beaufort Police Department.

The women were near the 1000 block of Craven Street when a man asked to look in their purses, according to police. They said no, then saw he was armed. The suspect grabbed their purses and fled on foot down West Street and turned onto North Street.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office sent K-9 units to track the suspect, but did not locate him.

The suspect is described as a 6-foot-2-inch, black male between the ages of 18 and 35 and weighing 160 pounds. He was wearing a black shirt, jeans and a stocking cap.

Witnesses said a man matching the suspect's description ran from a dark area into a red SUV, which sped off.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Erdel at 843-322-7958 or Beaufort County Dispatch at 843-524-2777.
