The University of South Carolina Beaufort has hired Quin Monahan as its athletics director, effective Sept. 10, Chancellor Jane T. Upshaw announced Friday in an early evening news release.

Monahan comes to USCB after two years as athletics director at Belmont Abbey College, an NCAA Division II school near Charlotte. Prior to that, he was the athletics director at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) from 2008-10 after previously serving as SCAD's Associate Director of Athletics (2003-08) and Coordinator of Academic Advising (2001-03).

At Belmont Abbey, Monahan oversaw 18 varsity programs and five junior varsity programs involving more than 400 student-athletes and leading 28 full-time and 12 part-time coaches and staff members.

In Monahan's time at Belmont Abbey, the Crusaders had one team win a Conference Carolinas championship (2011 women's soccer) and three that reached the NCAA tournament (2011 women's soccer and 2011 men's and women's golf). Two of Monahan's hires -- men's lacrosse coach Chris Barrett and former men's and women's golf coach Joey Denton -- were honored with Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year designations.

Monahan was serving as associate athletics director at SCAD when USCB launched its athletics program and, according to USCB's release, was a trusted adviser in aiding with the school's transition into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Sun Conference.

"USCB is pleased to have someone of Quin Monahan's experience as the Director of Athletics," Upshaw said in the release. "Quin served as a member of the original evaluation team for USCB's membership in the NAIA, so he has watched USCB's athletics program grow and develop over the past six years. His knowledge of the Sun Conference coupled with his established national reputation for professional excellence made him the natural choice."

"I am deeply humbled, honored and excited to be named the new athletics director at USCB," Monahan said in the release. "I am especially grateful to Dr. Upshaw for entrusting me with this amazing opportunity. My association with USCB goes back several years, so I am well aware of what I'm committing to, and I couldn't be more thrilled."

Monahan received his Associate of Arts degree in secondary education from Kansas City Kansas Community College in 1988 and his Bachelor of Science in behavioral science from Oklahoma Wesleyan University in 1990. In 1994, he completed a Master of Arts in counseling from Asbury Theological Seminary.

Monahan and his wife, Beth, have two sons.

According to USCB sports information director Justin Jarrett, the other finalist was Kent Allshouse, the athletics director at Bethel College, an NAIA school in North Newton, Kan. Allshouse and Monahan were the only two who visited USCB for interviews.
