A 33-year-old Hilton Head Island man is in critical condition after being run over while trying to recover his girlfriend's stolen car in the parking lot of the Bi-Lo grocery store on the island's north end.

Christopher Lee Roach was with his girlfriend, 26-year-old Christine Antonucci of Bluffton, Thursday afternoon when he saw a car she had reported stolen July 19 from his Port Royal Plantation home, according to Beaufort County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh.

When Roach put his arm inside the passenger side window of the vehicle, the driver put the car in reverse, causing him to fall. The driver then ran over Roach once and left the parking lot.

Roach was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah at about 5:30 p.m., McIntosh said.

According to a hospital spokeswoman, Roach remained in critical condition late Friday afternoon.

Deputies recovered the vehicle, a 2004 Honda CRV, from in front of a home in The Oaks apartments on the island's north end Friday.

Deputies have identified a suspect in the car theft and are investigating whether that person also was involved in the hit-and-run, McIntosh said. No arrests have been made.

McIntosh said the recovered vehicle belongs to Antonucci, who had reported it stolen about two weeks earlier. The car was unlocked with its key inside when it was stolen, McIntosh said.
