Ridgeland-Hardeeville coaching positions filled

Published: August 3, 2012

When the Jasper County School District announced that Ridgeland and Hardeeville high schools would be consolidated, it was obvious that there would be a serious shakeup among the faculty and staff, the athletic coaching staff included.

While former Hardeeville head coach Blake Raley was named the football coach earlier this summer, the rest of the athletic staff was a mystery until Tuesday when the new Ridgeland-Hardeeville High School announced its head coaches for the 2012-13 academic year.

Having previously worked with both coaching staffs, Jasper County athletics director James Gardner said the final decisions weren't difficult and the criteria were simple.

"Being attached to the school was one of the criteria," Gardner said. "Being a teacher at the school, those positions went mainly to teachers. Another criteria was experience."

Anthony Cuevas, formerly the boys soccer coach at Ridgeland, will be the head volleyball coach. Cuevas was a volleyball assistant last season.

Former Ridgeland volleyball coach Jody Foreman had already decided not to coach this season, according to Gardner, and former Hardeeville coach Shelby Jones does not teach at the school.

Cuevas lost out on his old position, boys soccer, to Todd Roberson, who led Hardeeville to the 1-A playoffs last season.

Jeremiah Faber and Frederick Toomer, both formerly Ridgeland head coaches, are the boys and girls basketball coaches, respectively. Faber led the Jaguars to the second round of the 1-A playoffs last year, while the girls reached the Lower State semifinals.

Former Hardeeville boys coach Kevin Wilson is an administrator at the school and on Raley's football staff. Ed Daniels, the Hardeeville girls coach, resigned last season.

Ridgeland's Joseph Coccia is the baseball coach. Hardeeville's Chris Staton is still teaching at the school.

Hardeeville's Beatrice Anderson is the softball coach. Ridgeland's Dontay Stevenson is on Raley's football staff.

The Ridgeland track coaches -- Russell Holley for the boys and Pearl Mitchell for the girls -- hold the same jobs, while the Hardeeville track coaches -- Robert Broome for the boys and Anthony Elam for the girls -- will contiue to teach at the school.

Gisharia Jobe is the cheerleading coach, and Jennifer Jordan is the certified athletic trainer.

Of the coaches who are still at the school but no longer have head coaching positions, Gardner said he's unsure which will continue to coach.

"We hired the head coaches, and the head coaches chose their own staff," Gardner said. "Varsity head coaches hire the staff from top to bottom."
