Tashawna Washington sat in her seat at Hilton Head Island High School's graduation with her future in limbo.
As the ceremony unfolded, the Seahawks girls basketball player watched as her friends passed across the stage, most having the next phase of their lives already planned.
Washington wasn't in that category.
"I didn't really have no plans of going to college or nothing," she said. "I just decided I wanted to do something, and not stay home, and be somebody."
So she reached out to Seahawks coach Dave Greenberg, who told her any hope of playing college basketball was slim.
"He told me I waited too late and all these schools wouldn't take me, basketball-wise, but I could go to school to get an education," Washington recalled. "But anything would work for me."
Greenberg made some calls and eventually found two possible homes for his former guard: Middle Georgia Technical College and Atlanta Metropolitan State College. After a visit to the central-Georgia area, Washington decided on Atlanta.
"Everyone was nice and I just enjoyed the environment around there," she said.
