ACHIEVEMENTS

  • The Women's Association of Hilton Head Island awarded eight high school seniors with scholarships at their annual spring luncheon meeting. The monetary awards recognize the students' community service. Each of the eight students received a $500 scholarship. The WAHHI Youth Awards Program was started in 1979 and has grown in scholarship awards and numbers of recipients. The recent graduates who received the 2012 Youth Award are: Erin Morgan Andersen, Hilton Head Island High School, Furman University, neuroscience/pre-med neurology; Heather Nicole Cartin, Hilton Head Island High School, University of Alabama, psychiatry; Christina Elizabeth Gusella, Hilton Head Island High School, University of Alabama, religious studies; Kelly Ann Humes, Hilton Head Christian Academy, University of Georgia, physcial therapy; Alexander Gerard MacDonald, Hilton Head Island High School, The Citadel, criminal justice and national security; Katelyn Jones Ryan, Bluffton High School, Brigham Young University, communications/political science; Zachary Cole Reynolds, Hilton Head Christian Academy, Furman University, pre-medical; and Justin Edward Shaw, Hilton Head Island High School, Clemson University, engineering.

  • Marian Matney of Bluffton received the 2012 Jack Parker Scholarship from NBSC, a division of Synovus Bank. This year, 91 scholarships totaling $85,000 were awarded to children of Synovus team members. Marian is the daughter of Douglas Matney, who works in the Bluffton office of NBSC.

  • Jan Davis-Vater received an honorable mention for the Volunteer Award by the State Board of Education. She has served 11 years at the elementary, middle and high school levels in various roles on SIC and PTSO. For the past two years, she has led the Education Foundation for the Beaufort County School District.

  • An open house is 1-7:30 p.m. Aug. 15. Pick up your student's class schedule, visit teachers, purchase uniforms at a discounted rate or pick up uniforms ordered in June. There will be door prizes and a free spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m.

  • Recent graduates Kelsey Borden, Priscilla Holland and Amelia Pinckney are featured in a Society of Bluffton Artists show, along with more than 100 member artists, through Aug. 11. They are the recipients of the 2012 Naomi McCracken SOBA Scholarship. Each year, SOBA awards scholarships to graduating seniors from Bluffton High School who have been accepted to an accredited art college and plan to major in the visual arts.

  • Student Eric McKenzie recently attended Sen Lin Hu, the Chinese language village in Callaway, Minn. McKenzie experienced a simulated visit to China and was immersed in the language and culture.   • Kathy Weatherhead was selected as the 2012 Outstanding Biology Teacher for South Carolina by the National Association of Biology Teachers. An awards ceremony will be held during a conference Oct. 31-Nov. 3 in Dallas.

  • Seventh-grader Alexandra Tappeiner attended the Junior National Young Leaders Conference June 23-28 in Washington with 250 middle school students from across the country. The conference teaches young people about leadership throughout American history while helping them to develop leadership skills.

    • ENRICHMENT

  • Ninth-grade orientation is Aug. 7 at Hilton Head Island High School. Students will spend a day at the high school, learn their schedule, get their lockers and have a lunch cookout.

  • The school will present the third annual Coastal Clean Water Festival from 5 to 10 p.m. Sept. 15 at Shelter Cover Harbour on Hilton Head Island. The free evening's festivities will include live music by The Chilly Willy Band and Domino Theory with Candace Woodson, as well as other professional and local high school bands. There will be an entertainment area for kids, local food vendors and educational booths for environmental groups. All local business and community groups whose continued success depends on a healthy marine environment are invited to participate with an informational booth at the event.   • The school will be accepting donations of gently-used items throughout the summer for the second annual Hilton Head Prep Rummage Sale in October. Details: 843-338-1867
