A Hilton Head Island man has been charged with felony driving under the influence after his car crashed near the Mathews Drive traffic circle Saturday night, killing his 72-year-old passenger.

Authorities say Dustin Steele, 31, was driving a vehicle when it struck a sign and then a tree while going through the traffic circle at about 9:30 p.m.

His passenger, Francis O'Reilly, was found at the scene with severe injuries to his upper body and head, said Beaufort County coroner Ed Allen.

O'Reilly, who had not been wearing a seatbelt, was taken by ambulance to Hilton Head Island Airport, where he was airlifted by LifeStar to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.

O'Reilly died of his injuries at about 2 a.m. at the hospital, Allen said.

The report said Steele, who had been wearing a seatbelt, was found near the scene of the crash.

Steele was arrested by S.C. Highway Patrol and charged with felony DUI. He is being held for prosecution, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center jail log.

Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
