State of the art exercise equipment greeted gym buffs when Purrysburg Fitness Center reopened July 10 in Sun City Hilton Head after renovations. Five new Nautilus treadmills, four recumbent bikes and five elliptical machines -- costing about $125,000--were met with great enthusiasm by residents. In addition to the new machines, the facility's upgrades include new TVs, refurbished locker rooms and freshly painted walls.

The project was part of the Sun City's Community Association's planned maintenance schedule and was funded through reserve funds.

New carpet caught the eye of Sun City resident Gerda Hollinger, who found it "pretty and soothing."

Purrysburg fitness center was closed much of June for the work. At the re-opening celebration, trainers helped residents learn to use the new equipment and adjusted their workout cards.

Sun City wellness director Cherie Bronsky said the improvements mean Purrysburg fitness center now has the same type of machines as the gyms at Hidden Cypress and the new Lakehouse. The Nautilus machines are computerized and use Kevlar belts instead of cables, she said.

Another new addition at Purrysburg is indoor cycling. Twelve spinning bikes have been ordered, and instructors will lead sessions with music for the same cost as the other fitness classes offered.

Another big change that residents will notice at all three gym centers in Sun City is that there will be wellness coordinators in each building starting soon.

"We're creating ownership in each building," Bronsky explained. "We're training people who are now on our staff to assume these posts and it should make it much easier for residents."

Bronsky, who has held the position for 11 years, will step down soon as fitness director to focus on program management and health and wellness programming in Sun City.

"This is something I really enjoy planning and I'm looking forward to it," she said.

Ron Zaluski, who has been assistant wellness director, will become director of the department.

Purrysburg fitness center: Open Mon. -Friday 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sat. 7 a..m to 7 p.m., Sun. 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. 843-705-4022
