Serious accident on U.S. 278 in front of Belfair

Rescue workers used the Jaws of Life to extricate an five-year-old child from a car that was involved in a collision with another vehicle on U.S. 278 in front of Belfair at about 11:20 a.m. Monday. Several ambulances, fire trucks and rescue personnel responded to the accident including Lifestar Air Ambulance Service, which brought the child to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah.

Rescue workers used Jaws of Life to extricate an accident victim from a car that was involved in a collision with a another car on U.S. 278 in front of Belfair at about 11:20 a.m. Monday.

Soon after the collision a rescue helicopter arrived, landed in the median of the highway, and took aboard a 5-year-old child who had been in one of the cars.

Several ambulances, fire trucks and rescue personnel also responded to the accident, which occurred in the westbound lanes of U.S. 278.

Eastbound traffic continued to move toward Hilton Head Island after the accident, but westbound traffic was backed up until the scene was cleared.
