Sheriff to hold crime meeting on St. Helena on Wednesday

Published: July 21, 2012

Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner will lead a forum about several violent crimes that have occurred on St. Helena Island, including a shooting at a nightclub last month that killed two men and injured two others.

Residents can ask questions and air concerns about community safety at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. The forum will be at St. Helena Elementary School at 1025 Sea Island Parkway.

Tanner also will explain the "mob law" in South Carolina that allows law enforcement to subpoena uncooperative witnesses for sworn testimony. That testimony would later be taken to a grand jury to seek indictments, Tanner has said.

The Sheriff's Office and the 14th Circuit Solicitor's Office intend to use the subpoena power the law allows to solve the crimes.

Information: Call Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh at 843-255-3312.
