Hilton Head Island's Island United team won first place Sunday, July 15 in the Under-10 boys division of Golden Isles Soccer's 3v3 Soccer Summer Blast in Jekyll Island, Ga.
The championship secured an invitation to the 3v3 National Championship to be held Aug. 2-5 at ESPN's Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla.
Island United won their three games -- 7-3, 12-1 and 7-5 -- before defeating Jacksonville Fla.'s Predator Dragons, 8-4, on Sunday in the championship.
Coached by Martin Duncan, the team consisted of two 9-year-olds -- Alan Leyva and Owen Allain -- and three 10-year-olds -- Jackson Duncan, Favian Ramirez and Curtis Driessen. Ten-year-old Will Todd will join the roster for the trip to the 3v3 National Championship.
The team is trying find a sponsor to help pay for uniforms and travel expenses. The trip is expected to cost $3,500-$4,000.
Island United plans to hold car washes, bake sales and hand out flyers asking for donations. The team leaves Aug. 2, registers that night and opens play Friday, Aug. 3.
