Eight golfers with area ties are among the 68 golfers who survived the cut Monday at Colleton River Plantation's Dye Course in an attempt to earn one of five spots and two alternate spots for the U.S Amateur Championship, which will be held Aug. 13-19 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.

Winnsboro's Brandon Truesdale and Waxhaw, N.C.'s John Varol are tied for the top spot at 1-under-par 71. Moore's Todd White and Zander Lombard of Pretoria, South Africa are another shot back at 72.

The top area golfer is Bluffton's John Patterson, who is two shots off the lead and tied for fifth.

Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy student Matt Cheng and former USC Beaufort golfer Luke McClellan are tied for seventh at 74.

Other area golfers to make the cut were Bluffton's Michael Balzer (76), Hilton Head Prep star and Wake Forest signee Woody Woodward (77), Bluffton's Chandler Vilcheck (77), Buffton's Justin Hoft (78) and Hilton Head Island's Charlie Niland (78).

The golfers will play a second 18 holes today. Playoffs for qualifying spots, as well as the first and second alternate spots, will be sudden death.

The Dye Course at Colleton River will host the 2015 U.S. Junior Amateur.
