The 90-year-old man suspected in the June 24 death of his wife remains hospitalized in Savannah from self-inflicted injuries he sustained in the incident.

John Cross, who was found in the couple's unit at Seabrook of HIlton Head retirement community with a gunshot wound and lacerations, has not been charged in the death of his wife, Page Arrington Cross, 84, whose body was found in a bed with multiple lacerations.

Some aspects of the investigation must wait until Cross is discharged from Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where he is in stable condition, Tanner said.

"A lot of it depends on when he is released from medical care, and I don't know when that is going to be," he said.

A psychiatric evaluation, for example, won't be possible until Cross has been discharged, Tanner said.

The Crosses were found by a caregiver, who arrived as scheduled at 8 p.m. She found a note on the door turning her away and another asking her to call 911.

Page Cross probably had been dead for a few hours when she was found, according to the Beaufort County Coroner's Office. Autopsy results from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston are pending, Coroner Ed Allen said. Page Cross was confined to a wheelchair, a Seabrook resident has said. A memorial service was held for her June 30 in Spartanburg, where she lived for a time with her family, according to her obituary.

She was born in Greenville, also lived in Anderson and moved to Hilton Head Island. The couple later moved into Seabrook, where they received regular visits from caregivers as part of the community's assisted-living services. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church on the island.

Page Cross was active in the church and in charities throughout her life, including the Salvation Army, the Boys Home of Spartanburg and Mobile Meals, according to her obituary.
