Cockfighting reported on Hilton Head

Published: July 9, 2012

Reports of cockfighting early Sunday on Hilton Head Island are being investigated by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, and one man whose immigration status is being questioned has been charged with a firearms violation.

Investigators spent about three hours on Great Barracuda Lane after arriving shortly before 8 a.m., according to a report. A Sheriff's Office spokeswoman would not say what they discovered because U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and county Animal Control are still investigating.

Ancelmo Maldonado-Moreno, 36, was charged with the federal offense of owning a firearm as a suspected illegal alien. He is in the Beaufort County Detention Center with bond set at $10,000 and is also being held for questioning about his residency status.

No one has been charged with offenses relating to cockfighting, according to the jail log.
