Five years ago, 18-year-old Jean White was a utensil.

Not anymore.

Starting July 11, the Bluffton resident will take the stage as Belle, the lead of Main Street Youth Theatre's production of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast."

This isn't the only change to the production, either.

The transformation of the beast is even more extensive this year, according to Erika Pyle, operations manager for the theater group.

Recent Bluffton High School graduate Filip Belka, 18, will be wearing two wigs, a beard, a prosthetic half latex mask and makeup. Belka might be best remembered for his recent role of Jack in the theater group's production of "Into the Woods."

More special effects will be used, as well -- thanks to the larger stage this year. They will include bubbles, dry ice and a fog machine.

The cast of 47 ranges from ages 8 to 80. Five sets of siblings will act in the production. Makeup designer Hannah Brown will be backstage as her brother Dan plays Mr. Cogsworth on-stage.

Barbara Clark will return as Mrs. Potts, and Lumiere will be portrayed by Adam Rich.

The production is directed and choreographed by Jodi Layman. Bill Peterson is musical director, and Sylvia Pitts is in charge of costumes.

The family-friendly production is an hour and a half long and is recommended for ages 4 and older.
