Man charged after car chase, standoff in Bluffton

Published: July 5, 2012

An attempt to pull over a driver for not wearing a seatbelt at about noon Wednesday resulted in a short chase and a standoff, followed by an arrest, according to the Bluffton Police Department.

A police officer was attempting to pull over Michael Jermaine Brown, 30, of Ridgeland, on May River Road when Brown sped away, said Lt. Joe Babkiewicz.

Brown did a loop around a trailer park on Little Aaron Road, while police pursued, before parking in front of a trailer and running inside, Babkiewicz said.

Within 15 minutes, police received permission from the trailer’s owner to go inside. They found Brown “texting on his cellphone and pretending he wasn’t involved in the chase,” Babkiewicz said.

The car Brown was driving belonged to the trailer’s owner, who decided to press charges against Brown for taking it without permission. Brown also had a suspended license, Babkiewicz said.

Brown was charged with two felonies: using a vehicle without permission and failure to stop for blue lights. He was also charged with driving under suspension and not wearing a seatbelt. He is being held for prosecution, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center.
