Brett Burdick seems to like running on Hilton Head Island. His domination in the annual Firecracker 5000 road race proves as much.

For the second time in three years, Burdick claimed the title at the July 4 event, which was held Wednesday on a course around the Mall at Shelter Cove. The Grand Blanc, Mich., native finished the 5-kilometer race with a time of 15 minutes, 40 seconds, besting Scott Denham of Youngstown, Ohio, by 16 seconds. Bluffton residents Seth Tucker and Anthony Vecchio finished third and fourth, respectively, while Beaufort's William Leek and Mark Rennix Jr. rounded out the top six.

Burdick, 21, also claimed the title in the event in 2010, when he bested Curtis Begly Jr. by two seconds. Burdick finished fourth in the event last year with a time of 15:45.

The women's title went to Hardeeville's Leslie Thomas, whose time of 18 minutes was 27 seconds better than runner-up Erika Shaughnessy of Hilton Head Island. Thomas, 21, earned a bit of redemption in her own right, as she came in second in the event a year ago to Rives Poe of Charleston.

A race record of 1,514 runners and walkers participated in this year's event, edging last year's mark by 42 entrants.
