Ridgeland woman dies after car hits culvert

Published: June 29, 2012

Shanique Martise Heyward, 21, was found at about 8 a.m., near the heavily damaged Honda sedan, Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls said.

The car had hit a culvert, briefly left the ground and landed in the front yard of a home on South Logan Street, Sauls said.

The accident probably occurred around 2:30 a.m., he said. Both Ridgeland police and Jasper County sheriff's deputies responded after it was reported at sunup.

Neither the vehicle nor damage to the lawn or landscaping could be seen from the road, so passersby probably didn't notice the wreck, Sauls said.

The cause hasn't been determined, but police are investigating whether speed played a role, Ridgeland police Cpl. Tim East said.

East said he couldn't determine whether Heyward was wearing a seat belt.
