Matt Cheng laughed after a double bogey temporarily derailed his round Wednesday.
In the past, the hiccup would have drawn a harsher reaction. But Cheng has worked hard the past year to flush those holes.
He moved on, salvaged a round of 3-over-par 75 and after 36 holes shares the lead at 3-over with Ben Reeves at the Hank Haney IJGA Junior Open, an American Junior Golf Association tournament at Hilton Head Plantation's Bear Creek Golf Club.
Cheng and Reeves lead by two over John VanDerLaan and Carson Young.
"All I wanted to think about was forget what I just did," Cheng said of his double on the ninth. "Focus on the next one."
A student at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy in Bluffton, Cheng didn't appear to feel any added pressure after his round. He turned his visor sideways, suggested Five Guys for a post-round meal and wanted to go home to sleep.
The Taiwan native has been in Bluffton two years since a friend told him about the academy. In Taiwan, Cheng practiced with his dad at the driving range and played golf on the weekends.
He found the facilities here more accommodating. He plays at the IJGA's home at Pinecrest and also at Berkeley Hall.
"You don't have this kind of practice facility in Taiwan," Cheng said, nodding to the Bear Creek practice area. "Nice range, a grass range, with the bunker, with a green -- We don't have that. We only hit off a mat."
Georgia native Bella Skinner grabbed the lead in the girls division, shooting a 75 to post a 4-over total for 36 holes. She has a three-shot lead on Maryland's Jordan McKelvin.
On another windy day, Skinner, who started on the back nine, held her round together after two early bogeys. On the par-5 18th, she knocked her approach to a foot to save par after hitting her second in the water. She made two birdies and two bogeys on her back nine.
Skinner is looking for her second AJGA victory and second in the area. She won the Junior All-Star at Berkeley Hall last year.
From that experience, Skinner hopes to maintain her focus from the past two days. She enjoyed a six-shot lead at Berkeley Hall but had to scratch out the victory in a playoff.
Skinner planned a beach trip Wednesday to help clear her mind.
"This golf course is really tough," she said. "I'm just going to try to play exactly how I have been. Nothing different. ... I have the ability. I just need to let it come out and not try to force anything."
Conditions were difficult again Wednesday, with a strong breeze early. Skinner played the last four holes of the back nine into the wind, finishing 1 over on the stretch. First-round leader Taylor Tomlinson, even par after Round 1, slipped to 8 over after Wednesday's round.
First round boys co-leader Chris Williams shot 78 and fellow first-round leader Shota Ozaki, even through nine Wednesday, also shot 78 and is three shots behind.
The conditions will again test the young player looking for his first AJGA victory.
"Dont get nervous," Cheng said. "Patience. That's all."
