Use more common sense out on the highways

Published: June 26, 2012

As I was driving the other day on U.S. 278, I noticed one of those 30-pound-overweight Lance Armstrong wannabe's riding his overpriced bike along the narrow shoulder. The guy in the vehicle in front of me was holding his dog with his left hand and driving with his right. As he approached the cyclist he swerved to the left to avoid hitting him, but the dog was blocking his driver's side mirror so he did not see the person in the left lane. Nether did the other driver because she was too busy texting. The guy behind her did not notice the whole thing because he was too busy putting mustard on his hot dog. When I looked in my rearview mirror I saw the person behind me on the cell phone writing down his next appointment. I'm sure all us have seen these people. It's tourist season. Just last week I noticed several bike riders lying on the ground rubbing their legs and heads. Please use common sense when driving. Use the bike paths, put the dog in the back seat, eat lunch in the park, text when you're at home, talk on the cellphone when you reach your destination. Have a safe summer.
