A 14-foot sailboat stolen from a Hilton Head Island beach turned up in a swimming pool on Dune Lane on Wednesday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriffs Office.
A woman renting the Dune Lane residence with another family discovered the watercraft along with several hundred dollars worth of damage to the property Wednesday morning.
A $600 concrete dolphin statue was broken and lying at the bottom of the pool, while flower pots and fence posts along the beach access walkway had been knocked over.
The owner of the Hobie Wave sailboat was notified by the Sheriffs Office it had been stolen, according to an incident report. The owner said the boat was kept at the beach secured to a cinder block buried four feet in the sand.
Deputies were unable to dust for fingerprints because of its location in the pool, the report said. Tire marks in the sand led from the beach marker where the boat had been stored to the pool, but no other evidence was recovered.
The owner was told where he could retrieve the sailboat, the report said.
