Lowcountry Heat, Beaufort Ospreys split American Legion doubleheader

The Lowcountry Heat and Beaufort Ospreys split an American Legion baseball doubleheader Tuesday night in Beaufort, with the Hilton Head Island squad taking the opening game, 2-1, and the home team winning the nightcap, 7-1.

All four pitchers in the doubleheader threw complete games.

Ryan Ward starred in the opener, striking out 16 in a three-hitter to lead Post 185 to the 2-1 win -- the team's fifth straight victory. Taylor Place led the offense for the Lowcountry Heat, going 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Mitchell Stewart was the tough-luck loser in the first game, striking out 10 and allowing two unearned runs.

Shane Dixon went all seven innings for Beaufort (2-6) in winning the nightcap.

Mark Jones had the hot bat for the Ospreys, going 2 for 4 with a pair of triples, three RBIs and two runs scored. Matt Thorpe was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Lincoln Fuller took the loss for the Heat (5-3), giving up only one earned run in going the distance.

The Heat play a doubleheader at Summerville on Thursday, and the Ospreys play two at West Ashley on Friday. The Ospreys also play a makeup doubleheader Tuesday at home against Summerville.
