Landscape students put skills to use

Students in the agriculture program at Beaufort-Jasper Academy for Career Excellence recently put their skills to the test. The students, who have studied landscape technology under teacher Robin Lutton, designed and installed small areas.

To begin, the students drew their own design to scale following the process they had learned in class. The class then voted to incorporate elements from each of their classmates' designs into the final project. They drew the new landscape to scale with plant selections.

After the plans were complete, the students cleared the land and installed the landscape. Many materials were used from ACE's supplies. Lowe's donated some perennial plants and hardscape materials, Lutton said. Nimmer Turf in Ridgeland donated sod, she said.

"The students really enjoyed completing this project from the beginning," Lutton said. She said they had mentioned the project before it was time to begin work on it, and referenced it frequently in class. "They were excited from before the word go," she said.
