Six representatives of the Bluffton High School JROTC will provide the color guard for ceremonies and presentation of colors at a Flag Day celebration at 10 a.m. June 14 behind the pavilion of Sun City Hilton Head. JROTC Battalion Commander Devin Oliver will deliver a speech. This summer, JROTC cadets also will attend leadership training at Fort Jackson in Columbia; Parris Island; and at Hunter Army Air Field in Savannah.

The Camera Club of Hilton Head Island recently announced the winners of its 2012 Kurtzberg Awards for black and white photos. First place was awarded to student Will Lattman for his entry, "Eyes." Second place went to student Jessica Smith for her entry, "Passing Afternoon." Third place went to student Griffin Bradley for "The Setting Sun." All three winners are students of Patty Schoelkopf-Lewis' class. In addition, Jessica's entry was selected by the Photographic Society of America for display at their September conference to be held in San Francisco. The Kurtzberg Awards started in 1998 and are presented in honor of the Camera Club's founder, Larry Kurtzberg.

The course is for rising eighth- through 12th-graders with computer and Internet access. Nine students recently received the Frederica Carson Art Purchase Award for visual artwork. Students submit pieces for consideration in the annual program in which Hilton Head Prep buys and permanently displays pieces of student artwork. The following students were honored this year: recent graduates Emily Blackshire and Sarah Garratt; 11th-graders Gracie Anderson and Riley Gula; seventh-graders Abby Kandel, Catherine Sheehan and Foster Willey; and third-graders Halsey Williamson and Elizabeth Hudak.
