A 17-year-old male was grazed near his ear by a bullet when a group of young men fired shots at the Quality Inn motel on Boundary Street in Beaufort early Sunday, according to the Beaufort Police Department.

Police arrived at about 2:30 a.m. at the parking lot of the motel, where witnesses reported seeing several young men firing shots, according to a news release. There they found the 17-year-old, who required medical treatment for minor injuries, according to the release.

The witnesses said a group of young men, including the one whose ear was grazed, had been visiting a room in the motel where some young women were staying.

A second group arrived and hostile words were exchanged. Members of the second group then went out to the parking lot and began firing toward the room, according to the news release. That group then fled the scene, according to Beaufort Police Chief Matt Clancy.

Several bullets struck the motel and a vehicle in the parking lot.

Investigators still were interviewing witnesses Sunday. Anyone with information is asked to call the Beaufort County Dispatch Center at 843-524-2777 or Investigator Gutterson at 843-322-7969.
