A 16-year-old boy from Burton died Sunday, five days after he was struck by a pickup truck on Shanklin Road.
Shalike Houston, 16, was an 11th-grade student at Battery Creek High School, where he was liked by peers and respectful to adults, principal Ed Burns said Tuesday.
"It was a shock to all of us," Burns said. "He always made other students laugh and never bothered anyone."
Houston was walking down Shanklin Road at about 4:45 p.m. May 22 when he was struck by a Dodge Dakota and badly injured, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
The driver, a 34-year-old man from Charleston, drove off the right side of the road and crashed into a tree, said Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins. An investigation of the crash continues, Collins said Wednesday.
Houston was airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. He died from traumatic brain injury, according to Beaufort County deputy coroner David Ott.
The driver was not injured.
A public visitation for Houston will be from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Marshel's Wright-Donaldson Home for Funerals in Beaufort. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Battery Creek gymnasium.
