A 16-year-old Battery Creek High School junior who was hit by a pickup at the intersection of Shanklin and Billy Hill roads in Burton on Tuesday died Sunday at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Shalike Houston, 16, died as a result of traumatic brain injury, said Beaufort County deputy coroner David Ott.

Houston was badly injured when he was struck by a Dodge Dakota at about 5 p.m. on May 22 and airlifted to Charleston, fire officials have said.

Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins of S.C. Highway Patrol said the pickup ran off the right side of the road, struck Houston and then struck a tree.

The driver was not injured. Highway Patrol's reconstruction team is still investigating the accident to determine if charges will be brought, Collins said.
