The 52 students of Hilton Head Preparatory Academy's Class of 2012 graduated Saturday in a ceremony at the school.
Total amount of scholarship money earned by the graduates: $1,084,333
Speakers: Faculty members Chance Cook and Katy Hudak introduced valedictorian Marielle Alexander and salutatorian Devin White, respectively. James MacLeod, former chairman of the board of trustees, and headmaster Anthony Kandel also spoke.
Valedictorian: Marielle Alexander earned a 5.13 grade-point average and will attend Villanova University where she plans to major in English.
Salutatorian: Devin White earned a 4.98 grade-point average and will attend Clemson University. He's considering majoring in mathematics or engineering.
From the headmaster: "The faculty and staff at Hilton Head Prep can only characterize the Class of 2012 as awesome. This tremendously gifted group of young people, so talented in academic pursuits, athletics, and the visual and performing arts, are defined by their devotion to their community, their concern for others and their willingness to give of themselves. We are proud of the men and women they have become, and as they move on to their university studies -- where we are all confident of a collective ringing success -- we wish them Godspeed on the journey." -- headmaster Anthony Kandel
