The Paper Company -- a decorations, stationery and seasonal novelty shop and the only store on Lady's Island selling U.S. Postal Service supplies -- is closing today. .
"It's been a great eight years, and it's been a pleasure to be here, and we've had great customers," said Jean Kindall, who owns the store at 10 Sams Point Road with her husband, Karl. "But the economy the last few years has just been rotten, and on top of that, we've got two little grandsons growing up in Minnesota, and they're just growing up too fast, and Grandma and Grandpa are just missing too much."
The store has been clearing out merchandise with a 50-percent-off sale on everything except postal supplies. Kindall said earlier this week that many cards and pre-decorated stationery items that can be personalized for birthdays, showers, weddings and other occasions are still available. All the store fixtures also are for sale.
The Kindalls will continue to live on Dataw, and Jean Kindall will maintain a decorating and flower-arranging business.
Beaufort Postmaster Ricardo Reed said a new contractor for Lady's Island is being sought, and five businesses have expressed interest. He said there is a strong customer base on the Sea Islands. Decisions on Postal Service offices and contractors are determined in the agency's national offices.
