The city of Beaufort is getting some spring cleaning done as its codes enforcement official turns up the heat on owners of unsightly properties.

Dawn Boren announced at Wednesday's neighborhood meeting at City Hall that more than 100 violation reports have been issued during the last few weeks to noncompliant property owners.

Violations include grass and weeds higher than 6 inches, debris, trash, fallen trees, unlicensed or wrecked vehicles, and appliances in yards, Boren said via email.

"Summer is approaching, and we have had a substantial amount of rain which can cause issues if properties are not maintained. Compliance with code violations will prevent snakes, raccoons and other rodents while ensuring life safety," Boren wrote.

The intent is to tidy up the city's appearance, one property at a time.

Improvements should be noticed soon, as owners have 15 to 30 days to correct a violation. If the problems are not fixed before a third inspection or an agreement is reached, owners will be summoned to court.

Violation reports can be appealed through a written application within 20 days, according to city code.

Fat Patty's at 831 Parris Island in Port Royal is preparing for its mid- to late-June opening with two job fairs. The first will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, and the second from 4 to 5 p.m. June 1. The restaurant, which will be in a fully renovated former home, will have design-your-own burgers with a variety of patties, ranging from beef to vegetable.

At least part of the former Dixie Rentals Mobile Home Park could become a Parker's gas station and convenience store.

The mobile home park has been empty for several months and sits on about 9.6 acres at 12 County Shed Road in Burton, near the intersection of Trask Parkway and Parris Island Gateway, according to property records. A sign announcing the Parker's was recently installed, but a company spokesperson could not be reached for comment.
