A man and his passenger died Friday afternoon when he ran a stop sign in his pickup truck and hit a tree inside Hilton Head Plantation, authorities said.

The victims' names were not immediately released, pending notification of next of kin. Authorities said the small pickup was driven by a 31-year-old Hilton Head man, and the passenger was a 47-year-old woman from Melrose, Minn.

The driver of the pickup was traveling east on Skull Creek Drive toward the intersection of Seabrook Drive inside the gated community on Hilton Head when he "disregarded a stop sign," crossed the road and hit a tree at about 3:30 p.m., said Lance Cpl. Brent Kelly of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The driver and passenger were trapped inside the vehicle, Kelly said. The driver was not wearing a seat belt.

Both were declared dead at the scene, according to Joheida Fister, spokeswoman for the Town of Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division.

The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office and plantation security also responded to the accident, Fister said.
