Attempted murder charges dropped against Burton woman

Attempted-murder charges against a Burton woman have been dropped after investigators found there was not enough evidence to support allegations that she tried to run over the father of her cousin's children early Sunday.

Precious Jewel Byam has been cleared of all charges stemming from the argument that led to shots being fired, said Daniel Brownstein, spokesman for the 14th Judicial Circuit Solicitor's Office. The dismissal followed an investigation by the Solicitor's Office and the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Byam arrived at Christopher Gaskins' home after her cousin, with whom Gaskins has two children, called her for help, according to a Sheriff's Office report.

Her cousin, Modena Miranda Trejo, told deputies she arrived at Gaskins' Harding Street home at his request, and he pushed her off the porch.

Gaskins told deputies that Trejo attempted to push her way into his residence upon finding him with another woman, and that Byam tried to run him over with a car when the two women were leaving.

Gaskins allegedly fired several shots into the vehicle and was charged with attempted murder. His bond has been reduced from $100,000 to $25,000, and he has posted bail, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center. He told deputies he fired the shots to stop the oncoming vehicle.

Trejo was charged with trespassing and was released on her own recognizance.
