Whale Branch 9, Green Sea-Floyds 7: Timmy Campbell powered the Warriors on offense -- going 3 for 3 with a three-run homer, five RBIs and two runs scored -- and fellow junior Dee Delaney was a workhorse on the mound as Whale Branch advanced to the championship matchup of the Class 1-A district playoffs.

Delaney -- who also tripled and scored three runs -- struck out seven and allowed four earned runs in going all seven innings. The Warriors led 9-3 with two outs in the ninth before the visitors rallied, but Delaney was able to hold on.

Danny Makowski had a hit and scored twice, and led the defense with strong play at second base.

Makowski likely will start on the mound for Whale Branch (12-10) in Wednesday's championship game at Lamar. The Warriors will have to defeat Lamar twice to advance to the Lower State tournament.

Thomas Heyward Academy 11-4; Byrnes Schools 1-3: Taylor Cowart went 4 for 7 in the doubleheader and scored the go-ahead run in the second game to lead the Rebels to a first-round sweep in the SCISAA Class 2-A playoffs.

Zack Newton was dominant on the mound in the clincher, striking out 16 in a three-hit complete game.

Cowart tripled to lead off the bottom of the sixth and was driven in by a single from Evan Duncan, putting the Rebels ahead 4-3.

Cowart and Ryan Day each went 2 for 4 as the Rebels (15-7) rolled to an 11-1 win in six innings in the opener. Joe Laycock got the win, pitching 5 2-3 innings, and he also went 1 for 1 with three walks.

The Rebels will face either Holly Hill or Spartanburg Day in a doubleheader Friday in the second round. Game 3, if necessary, would be Saturday.

Bluffton 4, Cane Bay 1: Courtney Smith struck out eight in a three-hitter, and the Bobcats manufactured their runs with only three hits to stay alive in the Class 3-A district playoffs. It was Bluffton's third win this season over Cane Bay.

Mikyla Houghlan drove in Whitney Morrell on a grounder in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1. The Bobcats (18-3) then took the lead for good in the fifth, as Brittany Windish doubled and scored on an infield single by Morganne Parker. Alexia Cortez scored on a throwing error to put Bluffton up 3-1.

Houghlan had another RBI fielder's choice in the sixth, scoring Kim Kerby on a play at the plate.

Erin Cook took the loss for Cane Bay, striking out four.

The Bobcats will play at Georgetown at 5 p.m. Wednesday for the district championship. Bluffton needs to defeat twice to claim the title and advance to the Lower State tournament.

Berkeley 11, Hilton Head High 0, 5 innings: The Seahawks' season came to an end with the road loss.

Jackie Budidharma and Peyton Leitner each had a hit for Hilton Head High. Freshman pitcher Whitney Haley struck out two.

Region 8-AAAA championship: Fort Dorchester won the region title on its home course, the Golf Club at Wescott Plantation, and Beaufort High School finished fourth with a 726 team score.

Taylor Simonsen led the way for the Eagles, finishing fourth individually to earn all-region honors. He had a 71-81--152 total.

Other scores for Beaufort High: Tommy Earl 87-89--176, Patrick Watson 99-101--200, Derrick Vaughn 109-130--239, Kevin Feltner 124 (first 18), Joel Fickes 89 (2nd 18)

The Eagles will compete in the 18-hole Class 4-A Lower State tournament Monday in Sumter.

Fort Dorchester 4, Beaufort High 3: The Eagles trailed 3-1 at halftime and were down 4-1 late in the second half before mounting a furious rally that came up short.

Christian Faale, Augustin Ruiz and Christian Campbell scored for Beaufort High (6-7 overall, 3-4 Region 8-AAAA), which plays at Colleton County at 7 p.m. Thursday.
