USC Beaufort baseball team ends regular season with easy win over SCAD

Tuesday evening at the Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville had quite a different feel from Monday night.

On Monday, future USC Beaufort softball player Ashlie Layman's walk-off three-run double in the bottom of the ninth led the Thomas Heyward Academy Rebels past the Bluffton Bobcats in a drama-filled contest that saw extra innings, 23 runs, 25 hits and a whopping 14 errors.

On Tuesday, there was no drama to be found as the 15th-ranked Sand Sharks baseball team handled SCAD Savannah, 6-2, in easy fashion in their regular-season finale -- a game that did not count toward the Sun Conference standings.

USCB (35-14) put up a five-spot in the second thanks to four straight hits, an error, a sacrfice fly and an RBI ground out. Soon afterward, Sand Sharks coach Bryan Lewallyn began lifting his starters.

"My goal was to try and get everybody that started two at-bats," Lewallyn said. "After the second inning, we started to get some of these other players in to see some time."

Starter Stephen Richards (1-1) and relievers Junior Delatorre, Alex Graham, Andrew Barrineau and Matt Barger held the Bees (26-25) to just eight hits and two runs.

Delatorre, a freshman from Beaufort High School, has yet to allow a run in his college career. He pitched two scoreless innings to run his streak to 19 1-3.

"It's always important to win," Lewallyn said. "That's why you play the games. But getting some of these guys some playing time is important, too."

Next up for USCB is the Sun Conference Tournament in Fort Myers, Fla. The second-seeded Sand Sharks will face either SCAD, Webber International or Warner at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Despite the knowledge an NAIA postseason future is secured by USCB's selection to host in the opening round, Lewallyn said the Sand Sharks' goal remains the same for the conference tournament.

"Our goal from Day 1 was to win the conference championship," Lewallyn said. "That's still in front of us. It's nice to know we're in. But we're still gonna go out there and do what we can to bring back a conference championship."
