Hilton Head German shepherd gets head caught in truck tire rim

Published: April 20, 2012

Every dog has its day and one Hilton Head Island puppy had a particularly bad one Friday.

Rogan, a 7-month-old, 75-pound German shepherd, got his head struck in a truck tire rim and was freed about 9 a.m. by Hilton Head Island firefighters.

Firefighters were called to a home on Great Barracuda Lane on the island's north end after the dog's owner couldn't free him. It's not clear how or when he became stuck, Capt. Dave Bell said Friday.

His owner thinks he might have been chasing an animal, Bell said.

Firefighters spent about 15 minutes using an electric saw to expand the tire rim's 6-inch center hole.

"We were able to remove enough portions of wheel, and the owner was able to push back on the dog," Bell said.

"The dog stayed extremely calm throughout the entire ordeal," he said

A mighty thirst was the only apparent effect from the whole business.

"The second he got out, we had some water waiting for him, and he drank (it) and was as happy as can be," Bell said.
