Port Royal Pasta Co. closes indefinitely

The closing of Port Royal Pasta Co. this week may signal the end of a string of attempts to revive a restaurant in the former Joe's Spaghetti House in Port Royal.

The Port Royal Pasta Co. opened in August and was preceded by Mario's Restaurant and Pizzeria, Silvi's European Cafe, and Roosters. Other restaurants and even a child-care facility have operated in the building at 1430 Ribaut Road, said Katherine Lang, who spoke on behalf of owner Steve Leverton.

The building's history as a restaurant goes back to the 1950s when it was Joe's Spaghetti House, a legacy Port Royal Pasta Co. gave a nod to with photos of owner Joe Malizia and the original eatery.

Lang said there were no immediate plans to open another restaurant at the location, and the building is for sale.

The closing came suddenly last weekend, according to Lang and general manager Kyle Foucher. Foucher believes competition from recently opened restaurants, including Olive Garden/Red Lobster and Lady's Island Dockside, pulled some business away.

"There's only so many people in this town that dine out regularly," he said.

Hoots bar to reopen as Dreamcatchers Nightclub

After sitting vacant for years, the site of the former Hoots bar in Beaufort will reopen in a few weeks as Dreamcatchers Nightclub.

Karen Patterson of Ridgeland and her husband have been fixing up the bar at 309 Savannah Highway, which was a mess after being closed, she said.

They want to create a relaxed environment and plan to add a picnic area in the backyard. Patterson said they chose the name and decorations after finding several small dreamcatchers in their home basement.

Days of operation have not been set, she said, but hours will probably be from about 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Ricky Humphries lives across the highway from the bar and is looking forward to the reopening. He remembers when it was a bait and beer shop years ago and his dad would take him there.
