The USC Beaufort softball team rallied with two runs in the sixth inning to force extra innings, but couldn't complete the comeback, losing 5-4 in eight innings Wednesday at Thomas University in Thomasville, Ga.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out.
The Sand Sharks (28-8) took a 2-0 lead in the fourth, but the Night Hawks came back with four in the fifth to take the lead. Catcher Heather Marlowe's three-run double was the big blow in the inning.
USCB added two in the sixth to get into extra innings, but the Sand Sharks came up empty in the eighth, and the Night Hawks scored on Brianna Dwoarak's two-out hit to claim the victory. Dworak was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
USCB freshman Kristy Cook went the distance, striking out seven. She allowed five runs on 10 hits while walking seven.
Thomas pitcher Alexa Fair went 3 for 4 and earned the complete-game win. She allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits and struck out nine.
USCB returns to action at 5 p.m. Friday, hosting Ave Maria in the first game of a three-game Sun Conference series at the Richard Gray Sports Complex in Hardeeville.
