'Two Gloves' Gainey can add new nickname: 'Spare Pants'

Even if his play didn't do it, Columbia resident Tommy Gainey guaranteed himself at least one more fan after the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing.

Sixteen-year-old Carla Loyola, a first-year student at the Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy working the tournament, was in charge of giving out bibs to caddies at the first tee during Thursday's opening round.

"It was early in the morning, it was just so cold and I was just wearing shorts so I was freezing," Loyola said.

When Gainey reached the tee box, he saw Loyola.

"She was just sitting there in the chair shivering," Gainey said. "So I told her I had a pair of rain pants in my bag and asked her if she wanted them. She said, 'no' and I said, 'No, really.' "

"At first I thought he was just joking," Loyola said. "I didn't know if he was being serious."

When she realized he was being serious, Loyola changed her mind and accepted Gainey's offer.

She took some ribbing throughout the day, as the pants were quite large for her and she was constantly having to pull them up.

"At the end of the day, I wanted to give them back, but I didn't see him, so I just left them in his locker," Loyola said.

And with the pants, she left him a thank you note.

"It was sweet," Gainey said.

"I think it was really nice," Loyola said. "I think that's the most important part of being a professional. He was letting everyone know he's just a nice normal person. He doesn't think he's any more than we are."

A BIGGER JACKET?

The fans hanging around the 18th green Sunday weren't the only ones cracking jokes about Carl Pettersson's jacket size.

After Pettersson claimed this year's tartan jacket, his wife DeAnna took to Twitter to congratulate her husband, where she borrowed a memorable line from the Chris Farley movie "Tommy Boy."

"Thx for the support and cheers for @petterswede!! Love love my 'fat guy in a little coat,' " she wrote.

Pettersson won't get fitted for his own jacket until opening ceremonies of next year. On Sunday, he had to settle for tournament director Steve Wilmot's tartan coat, size husky petite.

CHIP SHOTS

Luke Donald lost his No. 1 ranking in the world to Rory McIlroy after firing an even-par 71 in Sunday's final round. He finished 2 over for the tournament. ... Boo Weekley finished in the top 15 at the Heritage for the fifth time, as he placed in a tie for sixth at 5 under. ... Zach Johnson, who finished in second place, has made all 10 cuts this year. He's missed at least two cuts in each of his previous eight seasons.
