A new tradition was born Monday in the opening ceremonies of the RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing.

For the first time, the defending champion was presented with a framed print of an oil painting made of each year's winner.

Brandt Snedeker received the print from Heritage Classic Foundation chairman Simon Fraser, whose brother, West Fraser of Charleston, is the artist.

Simon Fraser joked that he had to do something extra for Snedeker since he had to suffer the indignity of playing with Fraser in last year's pro-am.

All future champions will receive a print, too, Fraser said.

The original painting of each champion since 1969 hangs in the Harbour Town clubhouse and conference center.

CONCOURS PICKS MARQUE

A photo of a 1926 Ford Model T owned by John Ball of Hilton Head Island is on display at the tournament this week, offering a sneak peek at another event that draws big crowds to Hilton Head.

The Ford Model T has been selected as the featured honored marque for the 11th Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours d'Elegance set for Oct. 26 to Nov. 4, event organizers announced Monday. As the chosen feature, the Model T will be showcased at the Concours d'Elegance on Nov. 4 at Honey Horn.

NEW HERITAGE GATHERING

A gathering Friday night hosted by Gov. Nikki Haley and the Heritage Classic Foundation and called the Palmetto State Reception will debut this year. The invitation-only event at the Harbour Town Conference Center will include Tartan Club members, tournament sponsors and foundation members. The Tartan Club was established in 1999 to rally community support for the tournament. This expands the party that came along with that membership.
